Eén voor allen/Allen voor één
Eén voor allen/Allen voor één was the third edition of Avantgarde en de Achterban and the last exhibition of the tripartite project at 37PK. During this evening The Holls Collective used the eye of the camera to zoom in on their collaboration as a collective. Each member of The Holls presented her personal view on the collective in a unique individual manner within an appointed field. The group infiltrated their own individual working methods, while the spectators were responsible for the after image.
Overview exhibition by Marjolein van de Ven and Liza Swaving: Thinking about the collective
In this last exhibition of the Avantgarde en de Achterban series, curators Marjolein van de Ven and Liza Swaving doved into the artistic process of The Holls Collective and looked back upon the last two Holls events that took place at 37PK.
Van de Ven and Swaving: “We associate the theme “Eén voor allen/Allen voor één” (One for all/All for one) with the notion of system thinking. In this scientific approach, which can be found in psychology and sociology, there is not only regard for separate units within a system, but also for how these units interact and for their place in relation to the whole. System thinking allows us to understand the (art) collective and its individuality within. The blueprint of the exhibition is based on the learning cycle of social psychologist David Kolb, who developed a model for experiential learning. Kolb’s cycle is composed of four elements: concept, experiment, experience, and reflection. With regards to these four stages we made a survey and interpreted the different demeanours of the collective. This is our view on The Holls Collective.”

Avant-Garde en de Achterban was produced in collaboration with Liza Swaving and Marjolein van de Ven.
Avant-garde en de Achterban (“Avant-garde and the Grass Roots”) was a tripartite series of exhibitions. A combination of get-togethers where the audience got involved with the choices of The Holls Collective, choices which every starting art collective has to make. Every edition of Avant-Garde en de Achterban revolved around contradictions within the collective. The questions the Holls encountered in their search for identity, recognition and development were not only relevant for the collective’s members, but recognisable for everyone, whether a lone wolf or a companion animal. The exhibitions consisted of the assembly of objects, after-images of performative happenings in the art space of 37PK.
In advance of and during Avant-Garde en de Achterban the Holls initiated a collective visual blog or sketchbook at www.thehollscollective.tumblr.com.
